Saving her fiancé leaves the narrator with lasting vision damage, but he dismisses that sacrifice and prioritizes Annmarie. He relocates their wedding for his friend’s comfort, then abandons the altar to attend to her again. Instead of waiting, the narrator answers from a mountain chapel to announce that her wedding is about to begin with someone else.
