Vampire Alexander Drake appears in the present seeking revenge against Laura's family. He takes her from her planned wedding to Aldrich, transforms her into a vampire and forces her to marry him. Aldrich later marries Winnie. Alexander sees their separation as repayment for his own lost love, imposing his past rejection on Laura rather than allowing her chosen future.
